Estuary Care Foundation SA Inc

The Estuary Care Foundation SA Inc was formed in mid-2016 to focus on the conservation and restoration of the Port River and Barker Inlet Estuary.

The Foundation is promoting trials of ‘Living Shorelines’ along the Port River, coordinating the Port River Shellfish Restoration Project and investigating the potential for Seagrass Restoration.

While the Foundation was formed to auspice such projects, it is part of an international movement to restore estuaries and shellfish reefs and is informed by the work of organisations such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The Port River and Barker Inlet Estuary, while home to a number of large industries, also features a 10,000-year-old mangrove forest, seagrasses, fish and crustaceans, saltmarsh and shorebirds.

Researchers have put an economic value of about $3 billion per year on the ecosystem services of the Port River and Barker Inlet region.
